Glen Lea's 2nd grade students recently finished their swimming lessons, after spending six weeks learning to be both brave and safe in the water as they practice putting their heads under water, floating, and swimming. Thank you to HCPS for creating this opportunity!

2nd - 5th graders shopped the ROAR store in the library this week, spending their points on snacks, objects, & experiences! Many bought cars & plushies, but they also bought face paint, "wear your hoodie" passes & breakfast in the library! We can't wait to shop again soon.

Our 1st grade students enjoyed a field trip to the Science Museum, where an SMVA educator taught us about different insects and reptiles before exploring the rest of the museum. We pulled levers, played with speed & sound, and explored different objects related to space!

Last week, we reviewed ROAR expectations with students and ended the week with a "Safe Hands" parade. Lions discussed the importance of safe hands (responsibility & respect) as they created their posters. Each week, we will celebrate success in meeting our "safe hands" goals.

Our fourth grade team loves to celebrate their students' success! They recently had a sundae bar to celebrate reaching their goals on iReady, which they track as a class by filling in squares together. Students are so proud to share their accomplishments!

Students listened to a read-aloud of How To Catch Santa Claus before brainstorming how to capture Santa. They worked together to create a model of their trap, using a cookie would lure Santa. We loved seeing how many different materials students used to explore this idea!

As we enter 2024, we are continuing to practice being responsible and organized, achieving our best, and respecting others (ROAR). Every month, we celebrate students' ROAR behavior with student selected activities. Last month, one of the activities included making slime!

Students have been asking for MORE PUPPETS since we saw Rainbow Puppets perform last year. A big thank you to Rainbow Puppet Productions & Optima Health for returning this year to teach us about Virginia's natural resources and landscape through the magic of music & puppets!

We were lucky to host Jaimal Yogis, author of the City of Dragons series, in December. Our Lions asked such creative questions about researching dragons and being an author. We are excited to host 2 more authors this Spring in partnership with bbgb, an amazing local bookstore.!
