Last month, students from 2nd through 5th grade competed against each other for the title of 2023 Glen Lea Spelling Bee winner. Congratulations to Taylor, our winner, and Ethan, our runner-up! We are so proud for Taylor to represent us at the county spelling bee.

November's Fun Friday included "The Floor Is Lava" as the library was transformed into the land of volcanoes. They completed an obstacle course, painted, and made their own volcanoes. Participation in Fun Fridays is one of the many ways we reward positive behaviors at school!

In November, our students celebrated their reading accomplishments with help from Curtis & Co. Students read 2 books this Fall with the reward of getting fitted for new Asics! Then they celebrated with basketball, soccer, volleyball, and track stations together. Reading matters!

First graders in Ms. Trent's class enjoyed their last Fit4Kids lesson of the season! They had a chance to spend time in the garden exercising together. They also reviewed the weather and seasons, which impact what grows in the garden. We love having our hands-on garden time!

Last week, Henrico Fire Dept instructed our Lions in fire safety & emergency preparedness. Students learned to test doors with the back of their hand, exit safely, and to have a safe meeting place. They also practiced identifying emergencies & calling 911. Thank you Henrico Fire!

We are so proud of our 5th grade student, Aliyyah, who won 2nd place in the recent Henrico County history contest with her essay about the Fairfield Library, which included information about its history & the state-of-the-art new facility! Way to go!

Every month, we celebrate positive behavior when students show responsibility, organization, achievement, and respect! November's celebration included "The Floor Is Lava" in the library, painting volcanoes, volcano "explosions" with baking soda & vinegar, and lots of building!

November in the Library: We explored nonfiction, including books about animals, how to draw, cooking, and more! We also learned how to make a simple circuit, challenged ourselves to protect an egg, and continued to find books that inspire us to read, read, read.

Earlier this month, we ended our school-wide reading of The Wild Robot with a virtual visit with Peter Brown! Peter Brown talked to students about how he became a writer, his writing process, and share illustrations They had the chance to draw together before asking questions!

We recently had our 2nd Annual Balloon Parade inspired by Balloons Over Broadway & the Macy's parade. This year's theme centered around The Wild Robot. Students planned & crafted their floats with Ms. Fines during art class before sharing with the whole school!

3rd grade students recently visited the Science Museum, where they learned about animal adaptations and food chains. They pretended to be penguins, jaguars, and spider monkeys and saw a demonstration with a turtle & snake. They even had time to explore simple machines!

Last week, we honored Veterans in our community with an assembly at Glen Lea. Students heard brief comments from several veterans about their service and advice for the future. Prior to that, first grade students wrote letters to thank veterans for their service to our country.

We love the Henrico library! Our second group of 1st graders recently toured the Fairfield Library, learning about what books and activities are available before engaging in story and play time together. We are so grateful for such a great community resource nearby.

Last week, the Glen Lea Lions took first place in the basketball tournament against 5 other elementary schools in the region! They won every one of their games by playing great defense and working together as a team. Our cheerleaders were right there, firing up the team & crowd.

Our Glen Lea students competed in a local elementary school soccer tournament on Saturday night, leaving their heart on the field. They are already asking when they will be able to play again! Thank you to everyone who came out to support our lions.

Last week, Glen Lea competed in the county's KEVA competition. Our 5th grade team placed 3rd in the team challenge! Our 2nd & 3rd grade teams came close, losing by a single plank in the build-off. We are SO proud of every single KEVA team member for their creativity & hard work!
